Character Education, April 2008
During our April assembly a representative from the Double H Ranch in Lake Luzerne came to thank all of the students and families for their many contributions to the camp. In addition she showed a video and answered student questions to give them a better understanding of the camp and its importance. The new Keepers of the hive are the following students:

The character trait we will be working on during the month of May is “Teamwork.” During the month of May students in the Elementary will have 30 minutes a week to play games and work on puzzles. This time has been set aside to reinforce the importance of working together, cooperation, peer relations, and overall teamwork.
Character Education, March 2008
During the month of March the character word we discussed was pride. The students made banners with the character words on them that we have discussed to this point. The new “Keepers of the Hive” are:

The character word for the month of April is perserverance. Our service project for the month is to contribute to the Double H Ranch in Lake Luzerne which is one of the Hole in the Wall camps that children and families with critical illnesses can attend for a week free of charge. Character Education, January 2008
At the beginning of the school year, the Elementary School began a Character Education program. Each month a new character word is the focus for the month, and a celebration is held at the end of each month. Heatly’s next Character Education monthly celebration will be held on January 25. The character word of the month is Caring. For the month of January, the students worked on a service project. They made 7 blankets for the sick infants at St. Peters hospital. Lillies of the Moon Author to Visit Heatly
On February 1st children's author and publisher Robert W. Kurkela will be at Heatly school. His book Lilies on the Moon is full of wonderful poems to inspire young minds.On the 1st he will read poems from his book, and tell stories behind the poems. In additon he will answer questions about becoming an author and how to get a book published. Order forms have been sent home so that families can pre-order the book and have it signed by the author.

Our Elementary students continue to be involved in the Character Education Program at Heatly. Recently we held an assembly in the gym where students were awarded with certificates for their display of “Responsibility” for the Month of November. Congratulations to all students! Pennies for Patients
A special thanks to all that donated to the Pennies for Patients fundraiser that was sponsored by the Elementary Student Council. Elementary Student Council members had canisters in each of the elementary classrooms for classmates to throw in any spare change, and in the office. With everyone’s generous donations of change, the Council raised over $250 to donate to the Ronald McDonald House!
Elementary Student Council Book Fair
Thank you to all who supported our Elementary Student Council Book Fair. The Book Fair was able to have each Elementary classroom teacher receive $50 in books. Congratulations to Council members on another great book fair!

Elementary Students Visit Liberty Ridge Farms
Fire Prevention Week
Students participated in Fire Prevention Week Activities the Week of October 8 – 12. Wednesday and Thursday the firemen visited each classroom. Students had good discussions about fire safety and fire equipment. The essay poster theme this year was "Practice Your Escape Plan".

Student winners were treated to a ride on the fire truck and dinner Thursday evening. Each winner received $35.00, Dunkin Donut gift cards and a certificate. All students received a pencil case.
Treasures Reading Program
This year Heatly students were introduced to a new reading program called Treasures. All students in grades K-6 will be using Treasures to encourage and provide growth in reading and writing skills. Teachers have begun implementing Treasures in their classrooms and are excited about this new program.
Treasures is an all-new comprehensive, research-based reading program that offers an abundant of high quality literature to engage all learners. Explicit instruction and continuing practice ensure students' growth in reading proficiency. Each week's lesson integrates grammar, writing, and spelling for a total language arts approach.

Family members and friends gathered for the 1st Elementary Moving Up Day/6th Grade Graduation Ceremony in the newly renovated gym. Students in grades K – 2 performed This Little Light of Mine for the audience, Grades 3 – 5 performed the Seasons of Love with soloists Erin Howe, Julianna Russell, Kayla Carey, Elizabeth Guenther and Samantha Rogers; and the 6th Grade entertained everyone with Breaking Free. After 6th grade students read their address to students, Special Awards were given to the 6th grade students. 6th Grade Graduation Celebration

Heatly’s 6th Grade parents through the students a Graduation Celebration that they will be remembering for a long time! Students enjoyed dinner with their family members, and then, danced the night away to DJ entertainment and fun and laughter for all. Congratulations to the 6th Grade Graduating Class! Apple-A-Day Program

Heatly Elementary has been fortunate to be part of the Apple-A-Day Program, run by the Albany Citizens Council on Addition and Other Chemical Dependencies. It is a literacy based substance abuse prevention program. The goals of the program are to help children build self-esteem, develop healthy habits, find a safe place, make positive choices and trust a safe person. The program utilizes reading, writing, critical thinking and problem solving in a 4 to 6 week session. The program is broken down into 2 sections, one is for students in grades K – 4; the other, is for grades 5 & 6. Grow A Girl and Grow A Boy are for students in grades 5 and 6. Two presenters come and we separate the boys and girls for a more intense serious discussion.
At the end of the 6 week program students are able to choose 3 books purchased from Scholastic by the Council. Heatly presenters are Jennifer Bombard and Darnell Michaels. This past week, elementary students ended their Apple-A-Day Program, with the Apple-A-Day Book Giveaway.

Elementary Field Day

Elementary Students enjoyed an activities day at the Field and the Park on Tuesday. They played various games at the game stations that were set up. Author Karen Beil Visits Heatly

On May 23rd, Local Author Karen Beil came in to speak with Heatly 1st Graders. Mrs. Beil read her book, Mooove Over! A Book About Counting by Two’s, and shared fun summer reading ideas with our students! It was a wonderful visit, and we extend our sincere thanks to Mrs. Beil for stopping in and sharing her ideas and her book with us! |
