6th Grade Science Trip to Herkimer Diamond Mine

The 6th Grade took a trip to the Herkimer Diamond Mine. The kids started their day with a presentation on the Herkimer "Diamond" (double-terminated quartz crystal).  This type of crystal is found no where else in the world.

After safety tips, they headed out the mines to prospect for the famed Herkimer Diamond.  Almost everyone was successful in finding something. They returned to the museum to pan for fossils.  The kids all lined up at the sluice and everyone found several fossils which they were able to keep.

Finally, the kids all created a piece of jewelry from either a diamond or fossil that they had found.  The weather was great and it was a very fun and educational day for everyone!

Greek Gods
Sixth grade students finished a unit on Greece by researching and dressing as a Greek god.  They shared reports with students in other grades.  Each 6th grader created their own costume which they believe best portrays their god.

Habitats
Fifth graders have been studying the environment and made ecocolumns to closely study how animals depend on their habitats to survive.  For weeks they have watched crickets, isopods, snails and mosquito fish live in ecocolumns.  Students have collected data and also polluted other ecocolumns with vinegar, salt and fertilizer.

Geese
Last year students found information about the effect grape kool-aid has on geese.  This is true!  We researched on-line and found many golf courses sprinkle grape kool-aid on the greens to deter geese.  When the geese feed on the grass they ingest particles of the grape kool-aid which explodes in their stomach.  This does not harm the geese but tastes bitter and they often do not return to this area again to feed.  5th graders decided to test this theory and sprinkled grape kool-aid in the River Park.

Measurement
Fourth graders had a Scotia Glenville presentation on measurement.  They moved around the classroom to different stations to practice their measuring skills.  We learned about area, perimeter, weight, height, temperature, time, mass and volume.

The Geography Game Show
Neal Nichols JR brought The Geography Game Show to Heatly School on May 12th. Neal has combined his love of geography, travel and art into a unique program. He can draw the world map from memory! With magic markers in hand Neal will draw maps of the world and engage children in discovery of countries. As Neal draws he gives students information that he later asks them to recall. Correct responses get rewarded with mementos Neal has collected from his many travels.

Neal did a show for grades 4, 5 and 6 drawing the world map. He later did a separate show for the second graders drawing a map of the United States. Every student and teacher received a signed print from Neal. PTO hopes to bring Neal back to Heatly next school year.

Classroom Pets

Sixth Grade has 3 classroom pets. Bunsai is a big black bunny. He loves to eat carrots, lettuce and celery. He likes to hop around the room especially when it's quiet! We hold him very carefully because when he is scared he kicks out his back legs.

Valentine is our guinea pig. She sometimes sings for her food! She just loves grapes, carrots and lettuce. She likes to be held but please be gentle.

Bubba is a red-eared slider turtle. He has a heated tank and hot rock to rest on. He spends his days floating in the tank. He really loves chicken! He has very long nails on his front feet and will snap at anything put too close to his mouth!
