Life During WWII
Mr. Normile was back in the classroom at Heatly to talk with Mrs. Desnoyers 8th grade students about life during World War II. Students really enjoyed his conversation about life ‘Back then’.
-Times were very tough for families during WWII. He told the students about the Ration books they used.
-He told them about stamp books that they used to save stamps, and turn them in for money.
-He talked about working as a paper carrier to make money.
-He used to live next door to a grocer. His mom would wait by their window, and when she saw the meat truck come by, she would grab her purse and sprint to go to the truck so she could buy the meat.
-Mr. Normile was in charge of bringing down the blackout curtains, and he and his family would sit around a 25 watt light bulb to be together.
-He collected tin cans and would go to the corner store. He was given 1 penny for each pound of tin that he would bring. The store owner would then be reimbursed for the tin cans because the tin was used for gun powder.
He will be visiting the 11th grade on April 23.
Thanks for coming back and sharing, Mr. Normile!
