Two senior
athletes honored for academics, leadership and community service
High School seniors, Molly Maloney and Zachary Miller, were nominated by the Heatly Athletic Department for the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (NYS AHPERD) Capital Zone Physical Education Student Leadership Awards.
Both students were honored for their
leadership, scholarship, athletic ability and community service. A
dinner was held on Feb. 7 at the Century House where the students, along with
students from 28 neighboring districts,
received plaques in recognition of their achievements.
Miller is a member of the boys' varsity soccer team, varsity basketball
team and varsity baseball team. His grade point average is 94.33, and he
is a
member of the Spanish Club, Math League, Varsity Club, Key Club and
National Honor Society. Miller has served his community by volunteering at
the local food bank and has gone on mission trips with his church to Honduras,
Bolivia, Galveston and
plans to go to Peru this coming summer.
Maloney is on the girls varsity softball team and
was the score keeper for the girls varsity volleyball team. She is at
the top of her class with a 96.65 grade point average, and is a member
of the Key Club where she has served as the vice- president for four years, French Club
where she served two years as vice-president, Students Against
Destructive Decisions (SADD) and Varsity Club. Maloney has also served her community by
participating in various village activities and was a leader at Heatly
School for organizing the Relay for Life. She has also been active in
the United Nations Children's Fund activities.
