Special delivery: First graders receive letters from “The Bear Under the Stairs”
“We
heard growling,” said Eva, first-grade student.
“I saw a paw print next to the bricks on the floor,” added Dominic.
On Oct. 20, students in Mrs. Agar’s and Mrs. Donohue’s first-grade class received letters from the notorious “bear” under the stairwell at Heatly School.
The bear started visiting students back in 1988 when Mrs. McManus was a first-grade teacher.
Her class at the time read the book, “The Bear Under the Stairs,” by Helen Cooper, which is a story about a young boy who is very frightened of what he believes is a big grizzly bear living under the stairs in his house.
The tradition has lasted over 20 years, and to
this day, every first-grade student is eager to read their letter from
the bear—and at the same time sharpening their English Language Arts
skills.
