Six Heatly students compete in Model Bridge Competition; Team takes home second place prize
On
Feb. 25, six physics students from Heatly School — Ben Brown, James
Gleason, Peter Heffern, Jason Lang, Zachary Miller and Anthony Picardo —
participated in a model bridge competition. The contest was held at the
Albany Marriott Hotel as part of the Capital District’s 30th Anniversary
Celebration of National Engineers Week.
Students worked during and after school to build model truss-type or
arch-type bridges out of balsa wood and glue. Each model was judged on
its aesthetics and then weighed and loaded to failure by a testing
machine. Cash prizes and certificates were awarded for first, second,
and third place in three categories: efficiency, load capacity and
aesthetics.
Miller and Lang won second place in the load capacity category.
“We had fun and our bridges were strong compared to those from districts
with more experience,” said High School Physics and Earth Science
Teacher Georgios Athanassiadis.
The model bridge contest, which has been a tradition at the Capital
District celebration for over 25 years, is sponsored by the Foundation
for Engineering Education, the Mohawk-Hudson Section of the American
Society of Civil Engineers, and the Eastern New York Chapter of the
Association for Bridge Construction and Design.
Congratulations to all of the Heatly students who participated.
