Students get hands-on experience during Job Shadowing Day
Heatly
students in grades 11 and 12 recently participated in a Job Shadowing
Day, where they were able to get hands-on experience at Empire
Ambulance, the NYS Construction Training Facility or the Greenbush Area
YMCA.
“Students got an up-close look at how skills learned in school are put
to use in the workplace,” said Heatly Sr. High School Business Teacher
Marilyn Michaels. “They learned what kind of education, training and
skills are necessary in the real world.”
At Empire Ambulance, students explored careers in the field of emergency
services. They learned the day-to-day responsibilities of EMTs and
Paramedics and saw first-hand how a dispatcher receives reports of
medical emergencies and relays that information appropriately. Students
worked with actual equipment and discovered what skills and abilities
are necessary to be successful in this field.
The NYS Construction Training Facility was an interactive event that
introduced students to the many employment opportunities in the
transportation construction industry. They performed job-related skills
and functions, such as finishing concrete, welding, rebar-tying, and
running a crane simulator. The career center explained the training and
education needed for each job.
The YMCA site provided students with an opportunity to speak with a
dietician, a marketing expert and a child care director. Directors of
the membership, aquatics and wellness departments were on hand to
explain their job requirements as well. The YMCA employees shared great
information about job skills and they showed the students how good
communication and interpersonal skills are needed in every job.
“Job Shadowing Day was a success and students provided positive feedback
about their experiences,” added Marilyn Michaels. “This day was a
culminating activity in what has been a very successful re-introduction
of the Career Exploration Program at Heatly.”
