Superintendent Jack McKinney to retire after 41 years
At
the Green Island Board of Education meeting on Nov. 5, Superintendent
Jack McKinney announced his retirement, effective June 30, 2010.
A graduate of Heatly School, McKinney returned to the district in his first professional role as a sixth-grade teacher. He also taught remedial reading, math, social studies and special education in the district. McKinney served the district as assistant superintendent for business, head of transportation and CSE chair before being named superintendent of schools in 2006.
“The Green Island School District has allowed me to grow professionally and to develop my abilities as an educator,” said McKinney. “I am extremely grateful for all of the opportunities that were offered to me by the board and the leadership of the district.”
During his time at Heatly, McKinney planned and oversaw the passage of two bond projects. The first, an $11.56 million project, added five new classrooms, updated the heating and lighting systems, refurbished all of the existing classrooms, upgraded health and safety systems, and equipped the district with new technology. The district’s $475,000 EXCEL project funded the repair of windows, interior hallways and the partition in the new gymnasium.
In addition, McKinney has worked to stabilize the school tax rate in difficult financial times. The tax rate has stayed the same for the past three years.
McKinney received his master’s degree in Educational Administration and Policy Studies from the University at Albany in 2000. He earned a second master’s in Education with a concentration in Special Education from Russell Sage College in 1973. His undergraduate work was completed at SUNY Oneonta in 1969.
The Board of Education will be working with Capital Region BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Charles Dedrick to conduct the search for McKinney’s replacement.
“Jack has been a valued member of the Green Island school community for over 40 years,” said Board President Norman Stebbins. “The board will miss his leadership, loyalty and dedication to the district.”
In a letter written to the Board of Education, McKinney wrote, “…the time has come for me to change the focus on my life from the professional arena to spending more time with my family. I want to truly thank all of you for the opportunity to serve the residents of the Green Island Union Free School District for the past 41 years.”
