Students determine ending to night aboard ‘mystery ship’

Photo of students with their "Mystery Ship" storiesSeventh- and eighth-grade students in Mrs. Hughes’ English classes used their imaginations to create an ending to a story for a writing contest started by the Times Union titled, “Mystery Ship.”

The story is about two siblings and their classmates who are on a field trip aboard the replica Half Moon Ship at night. When they see a shadowy figure aboard the ship, they recall that Henry Hudson’s crew mutinied and set him adrift in a lifeboat never to be seen again.

“It’s always nice to write for an authentic purpose,” said Michele Hughes, English teacher. “Our students were quite imaginative while staying true to what could logically happen.”

Students used school laptops to type up rough drafts, and then went through a self-editing process and conference with Hughes before finalizing their stories.

A handful of Heatly students chose to submit their stories to the newspaper. The Times Union will choose one winner from each grade-level and one grand prize winner. The winning stories will be published in the paper on Oct. 30.
