High school students learn crime scene basics

Photo of student creating drawing of crime sceneHeatly students in Mrs. Starr’s Forensics and Applied Science course studied a mock crime scene in class during the first week of October.

After studying the area, students used both math and science to create a final sketch of the crime scene drawn to scale.

Throughout the school year students learn other crime scene basics, such as identifying different characteristics of a fingerprint, analyzing handwriting, looking at different fibers through a microscope and looking at the life cycle of blow flies to determine time of death.

“So often as a teacher you hear students ask why they need to know what they’re learning,” said Starr. “Forensics and Applied Science allows students to see how different areas of science apply in the real world, in areas you would never think of.”
