Linking classroom learning to careers at the New York State Capital

Through a partnership between Heatly’s Career
Exploration Program, Junior Achievement, the New York State Legislature
and AT & T, 14 high school students recently took part in a special job
shadowing experience at the New York State Capital.
Students met a wide variety of professionals working in and around the
Capital--all playing a role in making the New York State Legislature
work. These public and private sector professionals shared their
personal career paths with students, discussed the skills and education
required for their position and talked with the students about steps
they need to follow to enter that career.
Students heard from lawmakers, legislative staff, lobbyists,
representatives from the State Police, a newspaper writer, media
specialists and others who help write the laws and make the state
government function. The day included visits with professionals "on the
job" where students got a real flavor for the work done at the Capital
along with a unique "behind the scenes, all access pass" look at
careers. As guests of Assemblyman Ron Canestrari, students visited the
Legislature live in session and received recognition for their
participation in the program. The group was welcomed to Senator Neil
Breslin’s office for a question and answer session and had their picture
taken on the Senate floor with the senator.
Feedback
from the students was very positive. They felt that the day provided
them with a better understanding of the education and skills needed in
the workplace. They saw the connection between what they are learning in
school and employment and felt more prepared to plan for their futures.
Thanks to Junior Achievement and AT & T for providing transportation and
lunch for this special opportunity.
