Summer at Heatly continues to be a busy time

Schools in the summer months are perceived to be quiet places, where the hectic pace from the previous school year slows to a crawl. That is not the case. It takes a great deal of coordinated energy and effort year-round to prepare for, and provide learning experiences for the 320 learners of Heatly.
So what goes on in the big brick building in July and August you might wonder? Much like the people who toil tirelessly backstage behind the curtains to produce a Broadway play -- the makeup staff, choreographers, light and sound crew, set designers and costumers -- there are a number of people who work throughout the year at tasks necessary to support the learning program at Heatly. Administrative, clerical and custodial staff members are busy.
What follows is a list of what takes place during the two months between school years to give you a better idea:
test data is reviewed,
August Regents exams are administered,
interviews to fill staff vacancies are conducted,
budget continues to be monitored and managed,
schedules are generated,
policies are updated to reflect changes at the local, state and federal levels,
supplies are ordered, inventoried and distributed,
rooms are emptied, cleaned and put back together,
new learners are enrolled,
preventative maintenance measures are undertaken to sustain a safe environment; and
