Students athletes representing all the schools in the Central Hudson Valley League (CHVL) met in November for their annual Chemical Health Awareness Workshop. Over 60 students joined together at Heatly High School to discuss important topics such as nutrition, drugs, alcohol, and peer pressure.

The students had the honor of meeting Prosper Karangwa, a former Siena basketball player who continued his career overseas where he played professional basketball in Europe. Mr. Karangwa presented a lesson involving three major points to live by:

1. Chose your friends wisely

2. Know right from wrong

3. Respect and love yourself and others. He also encouraged the student athletes to "Aim for the top! Not somewhere in the middle."

The students participated in a variety of activities including activities wearing special goggles that simulated what it would feel like under the influence of alcohol or drugs. They also used the district's Smart Board to complete a drug categorizing and completed an activity on nutrition. Lastly, the students athletes had the opportunity to interact with each other in a social manner as they completed the day with a pizza lunch provided by the CHVL. The CHVL would like to thank Prosper Karangwa for coming to a workshop.

Students from Heatly that participated were Austin Horton, Joseph Johnson, Monica Weisenforth, Alex DeCianni, Maeve Gurbey, Elijah Legault, Megan Russell, Cayla Heffern and Brandon Grady.
