This nationwide art competition provides Members of Congress with an excellent opportunity showcase the talents of creative high school students in their respective districts and recognize our nation’s gifted young artists.

Keeping up on the Internet…Cyber lingo
It’s hard to keep up with the fast pace of technology and as a result many of our kids are using technology in ways we as parents haven’t even thought of.
To help keep our kids safe on the information superhighway, we’ve started an ongoing column that will appear in each newsletter this year. In we will share with you some of the “rules of the road” for kids using the Internet.
In this issue, we are sharing some common internet terms that parents should know:
Blocking software: Computer programs that filter content from the Internet and block access to some Web sites or content based on specific criteria. Parents can use blocking software to prevent access to certain Web sites and other information available over the Internet. Client-based filters and filtering software work in a similar fashion.
Blog/Weblog: An online diary or personal chronological log of thoughts or commentaries published on a Web page.
Buddy list/friends: A collection of screen names in an Instant Messaging (IM) program or blog site. When you add people to your buddy list or you add “friends,” you can see when they are online and they can see when you’re online, making instant messaging possible.
Chat/Chat Room: A feature offered by many online services or Web sites that allows participants to “chat” by typing messages that are displayed almost instantly on the screens of other participants who are using the same chat rooms. Generally, the participants remain anonymous by using nicknames or pseudonyms to identify themselves online. Chat rooms are places or pages in a Web site or in an online service where people can “chat” with each other by typing messages. Chat rooms may have specific themes or interests –– for example, teen issues, movies, television shows, exercise, etc. Computer users can also go to chat rooms that focus on content (suicide, sex, pedophilia, drug use) that you may not want your children accessing.
IM or Instant Message: Technology similar to that of chat rooms; notifies a user when a friend is online, allowing them to “converse” by exchanging text messages. IM is offered by commercial online services or works through specific Web sites; the latter is called Web-based instantmessaging or web-based chat. |

Hannaford Supermarkets Scores with Major League Donation for Community Gymnasium Renovation Project
|
Hannaford Supermarkets has donated $12,000 to the Green Island School District to be used toward the purchase of a new scoreboard for the Heatly School’s new gymnasium. The new gym – used by both students and local residents - is part of a more extensive building redesign project at the school. Expansion and renovation plans will be on display.
Hannaford Supermarkets has presented $12,000 to the Heatly School, the only school within the Green Island School District, for the purchase of a new scoreboard for the school’s renovated gymnasium.
Heatly School is a K-12 public school building currently undergoing an extensive remodeling and expansion which will include a new, modern gymnasium.
“Our gymnasium is used by our entire community and with Hannaford’s generous donation we will be able to put the finishing touches on our state-of-the-art facility,” said Erin Peteani, principal, grades 7-12, Heatly School. “We are also looking forward to having the fruits and vegetables, which are part of Hannaford's logo, displayed prominently on this scoreboard. Hannaford’s commitment to encouraging healthy choices and a balanced diet fits right in line with our school’s wellness policy.”
This donation comes just days before Hannaford will host a wellness fair on Tuesday, November 7 at the Polish Community Center in Albany from 2 – 6 p.m. The event is open to all members of the community, who can take advantage of a variety of free health diagnostic services and learn more about health-related issues. Hannaford is also offering attendees the opportunity to get flu shots for $25 and pneumonia shots for $35. During the fair, people can receive a variety of free services including screenings for osteoporosis, blood pressure, body fat percent, total cholesterol and glucose. In addition, wellness professionals and diagnostic equipment vendors will be available to answer questions and offer product samples. |
