District describes mandated
policies affecting students, parents
Federal and state laws require the Green
Island Union Free School District to execute certain policies that
affect students and their parents. The following information describes
these policies:
Code of Conduct
In compliance with New York State's Safe Schools
Against Violence in Education (SAVE) legislation, the Green Island
Union Free School District is providing this Code of Conduct summary.
The Code of Conduct (i.e., rules and regulations) serves as a standard
for consistency and fairness to protect students' rights and promote
responsibility.
The districtwide code applies to all students, school personnel, parents
and visitors when on school property (including school vehicles) or
attending school-sponsored events. It sets high standards for conduct,
and outlines possible consequences for students who break the rules.
Classroom teachers and staff members may use the consequences as a
guideline.
Included with the Code of Conduct is the Bill of Student Rights and
Responsibilities, which outlines: prohibited acts, student activities,
rights of privacy, search of student lockers, alternative education
policies, maintenance of public order on school property, inappropriate
behavior, enforcement, and penalties. Procedures for disciplinary
measures and appeal are also included.
The Code of Conduct is available at the Heatly Main Office, 171 Hudson
Ave.
Student
Directory Information
Occasionally, student directory information
(name, grade, awards, activities, photograph, etc.) is released for
use in school district publications or to the media depicting school
district activities. Parents who do not want their childıs information
and/or photograph released should notify in writing
the superintendent.
Student Privacy
The federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation
requires school districts to establish or revise existing policies
and procedures regarding privacy. Parents may exercise their right
to excuse their child from participating in:
any survey created by a third party before it is distributed
to students, and,
questionnaires intended to collect personal information from
students for marketing purposes.
Policies may also be created to address any administration of physical
exams or screenings by the district other than those required by state
law.
Access to student
records
The District complies with the Family Education
and Privacy Rights Act of 1974, which protects the privacy of educational
records and established the right of students to review their educational
records.
Parents (or legal guardians) and 18-year-old students may set an appointment
to review official records relating to the student. These include
progress reports, grades, aptitude and achievement test scores, psychological
tests, and teacher evaluations. Appropriate school personnel must
be present during the inspection to prevent any misinterpretation
of the records.
Individual student records are confidential, and are not released
to colleges, employers or others without written permission. Customary
directory information (athletic team rosters, graduation lists, or
extracurricular club lists) is made public for school purposes. A
list of senior class members is provided to the military services
unless parents give the District prior notice that they do not want
their child's name included.
