Meet our new secondary English teacher, Caitlin Distasio!
Meet our new secondary English teacher, Caitlin Distasio! Ms. Distasio has been a part of the education profession for 12 years and has been at Heatly for about two months where she teaches students in grades 7-11. Ms. Distasio completed her undergraduate work at SUNY Plattsburgh, graduating in 2009 with her bachelor’s degree in English. She then continued her education at SUNY Plattsburgh, obtaining a master’s degree in English Adolescence Education in 2010.
Ms. Distasio began her teaching career as a substitute teacher in Germantown CSD where she also served as a high school teaching assistant. Ms. Distasio then became a 7th and 8th grade ELA teacher at an independently operated public school, a position she held for two years. Ms. Distasio then took the next step in her teaching career by transitioning to Albany High School where she spent seven years teaching 9th grade ELA Honors and AVID. She also taught a class called “College and Career Prep” and even wrote the curriculum for the course.
During her time at Albany High School, Ms. Distasio was an active member of the “Response to Intervention Team” where she “worked to help support students with unique behavioral and academic needs”. Ms. Distasio then moved on to teach 7th grade ELA and 6th grade AVID at Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School in Albany.
There are many aspects of teaching that Ms. Distasio loves, however, what she enjoys the most about teaching is getting to know her students and being creative in her lesson plans to help her students make personal connections to learning. She goes on to say that the best part about being a teacher is “that everyday is different. Everyday is a new opportunity. It is never boring.”
Over the course of her 12-year teaching career, Ms. Distasio has been given many different pieces of advice, however the best advice she’s received is “to be flexible and be willing to go off the lesson plan to help foster a teachable moment.”
When Ms. Distasio isn’t teaching at Heatly, she can be found working on the Family and Community Outreach Committee here at Heatly. She’s also a member of the National Council of Teachers of English. A fun fact about Ms. Distasio is that she was in a classical ballet company for six years.
