Update to student cell phone use policy

Dear Heatly Families,

In an effort to address the recent increase in cyberbullying and classroom disruptions, Green Island UFSD, with the support of the Board of Education, will shift to a no cell phone use policy for the remainder of the school year. We’ve recently noticed a significant rise in students texting, taking phone calls, using various apps such as SnapChat and Tik-Tok while sitting in class. This has caused major distractions to the education setting. The updated procedure prohibits students from using their cell phones during the school day. 

Beginning on Tuesday, May 31 the district will implement a zero tolerance policy on student cell phone usage. This means that students can have their device on them, however it must be turned off and stored away. This includes study halls and lunch time, as each student has their own Chromebook device to use for educational purposes during the instructional day.

We realize that many parents will be concerned about not having immediate access to their child during the school day. If they need to reach their child, parents/guardians can contact the Main Office to leave a message for them. The same principle applies to students. If students need to contact their parents during the school day, they should come to the Main Office. 

If a student violates the updated policy, the following consequences will occur:

  • 1st Offense: Teacher can ask the student to turn off their cell phone. Non-compliance will result in the student’s cell phone being confiscated for the remainder of the school day. The cell phone will then be returned to the student at the end of the day.
  • 2nd Offense: The student’s cell phone will be confiscated and a parent will be required to pick up the device.
  • 3rd Offense: Formal progressive discipline such as lunch detention, after school detention or in-school suspension, depending on violations.

Furthermore, we understand our students will have many emotions about the updated cell phone policy, especially given the recent tragic events in Buffalo and Uvalde, TX. We want to emphasize that the safety and well-being of our students will always be our top priority. While cell phones must remain turned off and packed away, we want to reassure parents that students can access their cell phone in the event of an emergency. In addition, our improved safety protocols, the presence of our school resource officer Deputy Pasquini, as well as a second SRO from the Albany County Sheriff’s Department for the next few days, will help restore a sense of safety and security for our students, faculty and staff. If students are feeling increased stress, we encourage them to reach out to their guidance counselor or Ms. Lupinski.
