On Sept. 30, 2020, the New York State Department of Health released a Pre-K to Gr 12 COVID-19 Toolkit containing updated guidance for schools. I wanted to update you on some of the guidance.
Return to School Protocols
As you know, everyone who enters our school building is being asked to screen for possible COVID-19 symptoms. Those who are ill are asked to stay home. We wanted to clarify what needs to happen before students and staff can return to school after falling ill or showing COVID-19 symptoms.
If a student or employee has shown symptoms of the coronavirus, one of the following must take place before that person can return to school:
Your healthcare provider gives you a conclusive diagnosis of something other than COVID-19;
You test negative for COVID-19; or
You are released from quarantine/isolation by the Department of Health.
Students and employees will be asked to provide documentation from a healthcare provider of an alternative diagnosis, or a negative COVID test result.
We are aware that these protocols may present challenges for some families, but please know that these protocols are not simply school or district policy. Only the Health Department has the power to release individuals from quarantine or isolation, which would then allow them to return to the school.
Protocols if there is a Confirmed COVID-19 Case
As a reminder, in the event there is a confirmed COVID-19 case in the school, the school will have a 24 hour emergency remote learning day. Students in grades 4-12 will learn on their school-issued devices. Students in grades K-3 will receive a comprehensive packet this week. Please do not have your students complete this packet right now. The packet will be for students to complete if we have an emergency remote learning day. We have ordered devices to distribute to our K-3 students. Unfortunately, those devices are currently on backorder. We will update our families when the devices are received so they can be shared with our students.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
I will keep you informed of additional guidance or information as it becomes available.
