Change in instructional option for the second quarter

Dear families,

I can’t believe we completed the first five weeks of school! Thank you so much for your continued support and collaboration with the school as we reopened under extraordinary circumstances.

As you are aware, we are asking families to commit to their learning choice (in-person or fully remote) each quarter. If you would like to change your child’s learning choice for the second quarter, you must notify the school no later than Monday, Nov. 2. If your child’s learning choice is remaining the same, you do not need to notify the school.

If your child is switching from remote instruction to in-person instruction, please review the district’s reopening plan and view the requirements for face coverings in school.

If your child is switching from in-person to remote instruction, please review the guidelines below.

Remote Learning Information

If a parent or guardian determines that they prefer for the child to participate in a full remote learning setting, it must be noted that while remote instruction experience will be rigorous, it will not be equivalent to an on-site/in-person learning experience. The full remote learning setting will entail synchronous and asynchronous lessons and engagement. Students who participate in the full remote learning option must meet all criteria as outlined in New York State Education Department regulations. This includes daily virtual interactions with their instructors (per the schedule) and completion of all required course material.

Instructional areas of focus will be core areas of ELA, math, science and social studies and required courses for graduation. There will be limited elective offerings available in the full remote learning model.

Requirements for Full Remote Learning option

  • Parents or guardians must notify the district of their intent to enroll their student in the full remote learning model no later than Monday, Nov. 2. Any parent that does NOT complete the form by Nov. 2 will remain enrolled as in-person for the second marking period.
  • Due to reassigning staff, students who are enrolled in the full remote learning will be assigned to only online learning for the entire marking period (approximately 10 weeks).
  • Parents of younger students will need to be engaged in supporting instruction from home.
  • It will be expected that secondary students who are enrolled in the Full Remote Learning model, adhere to the instructional schedule as their in-person peers.
  • Parents who choose in-person instruction can shift to the full remote learning model for the remainder of the marking period at any time during the school year.
  • Parents who would like to shift their child back to in-person instruction must notify the district one week prior to the end of the marking period. Marking period dates will be provided in advance.
  • All students who are enrolled in the full remote learning option will be required to virtually “check in” with their assigned teacher(s) every day. Teacher assignments will be established at the end of August.
  • Students will be responsible to participate in assessments, including those designed by their teacher, district and New York state.
  • Students must complete and return all work assignments.
  • Students must adhere to the district Code of Conduct including the use of district technology policies.
  • Students enrolled in the full remote learning model will not be eligible for in-person Heatly events including athletics, athletic events, school functions and/or in-person school gathering fundraising events. If any clubs or extracurricular activities are offered, they may be able to participate if offered virtually. Please note, any extracurricular activities and athletics have not yet been organized.
  • The full remote learning option will stay in effect for the 2020-21 school year unless:
    • COVID restrictions are lifted by the Governor, State Education Department or any other agency with authority over the operation of schools or
    • Families provide required notice of the intent to re-enroll their child in the onsite program. Return to onsite schooling will take effect at the start of the next marking period.

Special Education Services for Students Receiving Entirely Virtual Instruction

The delivery of special education services to students who are participating in full remote learning will ensure that students have access to a free and appropriate public education. Special Education services will include both synchronous and asynchronous instruction. This will be achieved by using a variety of resources provided in collaboration with general education teachers to ensure educational materials are accessible, adapted, modified and appropriate in accordance with students’ IEPs. Lessons, tasks and activities will focus on student’s IEP goals and may include pre-recorded lessons, synchronous teaching and teacher-designed learning activities. Students will have access to daily contact with their Special Education case manager. Related services will be provided virtually as outlined on students’ IEPs.

Homeschooling

Families who prefer to not have their child attend the Green Island School District in-person or participate in the full remote learning option may also exercise their right to homeschool their child. For clarification, there is a distinct difference between homeschooling and full remote learning. Per NYSED Regulations, if a parent chooses to homeschool their child, they must submit an individualized home instruction plan (IHIP) to the superintendent for review. If approved by the superintendent, the parent is solely responsible to generate curriculums, lessons and assessments as outlined in the state regulations.
