Green Island Union Free School District will benefit from a new partnership with St. Peter’s Health Partners through the Creating Healthy Schools and Communities initiative, a five-year grant-funded program supported by the New York State Department of Health.
The contract runs from June 1, 2026, through May 31, 2031, and will support health and wellness efforts in Green Island, as well as Albany, Troy, Schenectady, and Rensselaer.
St. Peter’s Health Partners will work with Green Island UFSD administrators, staff, and community partners to support healthier school environments for students.
Within the district, work will focus on strengthening school policies and practices, expanding physical education opportunities and improving school nutrition.
In the broader community area, work will include expanding fruit and vegetable access, promoting healthier food options, and improving walking or biking opportunities with support from local partners like Capital Streets, a nonprofit dedicated to transforming the Capital Region into a more pedestrian-friendly community.
“We are thankful for this opportunity to partner with St. Peter’s Health Partners as it truly takes collaboration from many stakeholders to support our students,” said Superintendent Dan Kalbfliesh, “This funding and training will support our ongoing commitment to building a true community school which has been a district priority through our strategic plan. This will enrich the student experience.”
Green Island UFSD will receive training, technical assistance, and resources to support school wellness efforts. This may include support for equipment, gardening supplies, and other resources that encourage physical activity and healthy eating.
“St Peter’s Health Partners is excited to partner with Green Island UFSD to bring this work to life through the Creating Healthy Schools and Communities initiative,” said Coordinator Latanya Christian. “This effort reflects our commitment to advancing health equity by supporting schools and communities with the tools, resources, and collaboration needed to create healthier environments. Together, we look forward to expanding opportunities for physical activity, increasing access to nutritious foods, and fostering sustainable changes that will benefit students and families for years to come.”
More information about this partnership and upcoming community involvement will be shared as the initiative moves forward.
